Have you ever been so mad at someone that you spent hours praying for God to bless them and reveal himself to them? No! Me either! It’s extremely difficult, if not impossible, to continually pray for someone and still have a heart of anger towards them. Why? As we identify the struggles and difficult times in their lives and bring them before the Lord, we start to focus more on Christ and the work he has done, and less on ourselves. Where Christ abounds- Love abounds and Love covers a multitude of sins. So I’d like to encourage you as we continue to encourage our husbands, we should be in daily prayer for them. I’m not talking about a quick, “thank you Lord that I have a husband” before you fall asleep, but a deep meaning prayer life that recognizes the specific challenges our husbands face.
I notice a huge difference in my relationship with Daniel when I’m praying for Daniel specifically. I always thank the lord for Him, but there is something powerful and bonding that unites us more deeply when I’m speaking to God about his life and asking for wisdom and guidance in my role as his helpmate. This can also be an area that encourages better communication. Do you ask your husband where he is struggling? Have you asked your husband if he has any prayer requests? When he shares a circumstance at work that has bothered him, are you quick to forget? Or do you immediately write it down so that you can pray for him?
Here are a few questions to get you started followed by some great prayer starters.
- Honey, what is the biggest struggle you are facing in your life?
- Who gives you the most biblical counsel?
- I want to be in prayer for you; how can I be praying for you?
To help you get started, here are a few things you can pray for when praying for your husband.
Adaptation of POWERFUL PRAYERS FOR YOUR HUSBAND by B.J. Reinhard
SPIRITUAL PROTECTION- Lord, protect my husband from the temptations he faces today, especially concerning _______________________(name a specific area of temptation anything from wasted time playing XBOX to alcohol). Teach him to guard what enters his mind, to focus on You, and to resist the enemy by faith. (1 Cor 10:13; Col 3:1-2; Jas. 4:7; 1 Jn 5:4-5)
SEXUAL PURITY- Lord, Satan would twist ____________’s God-given desire for sex into something ugly. Prompt him to turn to You for safety and freedom from lust, pornography, sexual fantasies, and inappropriate relationships. Let him fin acceptance and satisfaction in You and within the context of our marriage. (Psalm 90:14; Prov 5:15-20; Heb 13:4)
FRIENDS- Lord, bring my husband friends with whom he can share his joys and struggles- friends who speak frankly with him and remind him of Your love and power. Show him how to be a good friend in return. (Prov 18:24, 27:6; Eccl 4:9-12)
PEACE- Lord, as my husband faces another day of challenges, reveal Your deep love to him. Cast out his fears. May your peace rule in his heart. (1 John 4:18 and Colossians 3:15)
INTIMACY WITH GOD- Lord, please remind_____________ of Your deep, personal knowledge of him, and sure him that he can pour out his heart to You. May his walk with You be more than an intellectual exercise. Reveal Yourself to him so that he can know and worship You as You are. (Ps 62:8, 139:1-4; Jer 9:24; Jn 14:21)
